Pulsar Axion XM30F – this thermal imaging monocular for observation in the dark

If you are looking for a compact thermal imager that you can effortlessly take with you during long observation sessions, then this Axion XM30F is an excellent choice. Weighing less than 250 grams and with a detection range of up to 1300 metres, this monocular combines portability with impressive performance for detecting heat sources in complete darkness.

Our opinion of this thermal imaging monocular

The Shogun team is impressed by the balance between size and functionality. This monocular feels comfortable in the hand thanks to the symmetrical button layout, and the magnesium alloy housing feels surprisingly robust for such a lightweight device. The AMOLED display provides a bright, high-contrast image that remains comfortable for your eyes even during prolonged use.

Technology and optical performance

The heart of this Axion XM30F is the thermal sensor with a resolution of 320x240 pixels and a pixel pitch of 12 microns. This means you can detect temperature differences down to 50 mK – ideal for distinguishing subtle temperature variations. The F30/1.2 objective lens efficiently captures infrared radiation, while the 3x optical magnification (expandable up to 12x with digital zoom) gives you the flexibility to observe both nearby and distant subjects.

The field of view of 7.8x5.9 degrees translates to approximately 13.7 metres at 100 metres distance, which is comfortable when scanning larger areas. The grey magnesium alloy housing not only protects against moisture and temperature fluctuations, but also dissipates heat from the electronics for consistent image quality.

Mounting and compatibility

This Axion XM30F is designed as a handheld observation instrument and is not mounted on a rail like traditional rifle scopes. The compact size and ergonomic design make it ideal for handheld use, allowing you to hold the device steadily during longer observation sessions. The included wrist strap provides extra security during use in the field.

Who is this thermal imaging optic intended for?

This thermal monocular is perfect for nature enthusiasts who want to observe at night without disturbance, security personnel who need to scan perimeters, or outdoor enthusiasts who want to find their way in the dark. With the ability to detect heat sources up to 1300 metres, this device is ideal for those who want to observe at medium range without relying on ambient light. The intuitive operation makes it suitable for both beginners and experienced users of thermal optics.
