H&N Heavy Slug HP 5.5mm 38gr – Heavy hollow point slug for PCP air rifles

The H&N Heavy Slug is a heavy slug for PCP air rifles designed to deliver its full force at distances between 75 and 100 metres. With a caliber of 5.5 mm (.22) and a weight of 38 grain, this projectile is intended for shooters using a powerful PCP system delivering a minimum of 40 joules. The advanced hollow point design ensures excellent energy transfer upon impact, whilst the lead projectile is guided stably through the barrel for consistent performance.

Our experience from the Shogun team

During our test sessions with the H&N Heavy Slug, the stability at longer distances was particularly notable. At 75 to 100 metres, this slug maintains a clean flight path, provided your air rifle delivers sufficient energy and has a suitable twist rate. The projectile loads smoothly in most airgun magazines and single-shot trays, and the heavy weight results in less wind sensitivity than lighter pellets. Those who take the time to tune their setup will find that this slug performs best in PCP systems configured for higher pressures.

Technical specifications in practice

The projectile has a caliber of 5.51 mm (.217), weighs 38 grain (2.46 gram), and is supplied in a pack of 120 pieces. It is made from lead and features a hollow point design, specifically developed as an Advanced Hollow Point Slug. The high weight combined with the hollow nose produces considerable expansion upon impact, indicating effective energy transfer. Testing different grain weights within your own setup remains a sensible step to find the optimal combination, and a chronograph provides valuable insight into the actual energy output so you can fine-tune the performance of this slug accordingly.

Who is this air rifle ammunition suitable for?

This air rifle ammunition is intended for shooters working with a PCP system from approximately 40 joules and who are focused on precision shooting at distances of 75 to 100 metres. Due to the hollow point construction, this projectile may also be used for pest and rodent control. Please be aware that the use of an air rifle for pest control is regulated by law: in many cases a permit or hunting licence is required, and this is exclusively permitted for certified pest controllers or authorised users.
