H&N Heavy Slug HP 5.53mm 34gr – heavy hollow point slug for PCP air rifle

The H&N Heavy Slug HP is a substantial slug for PCP air rifle in caliber 5.5 mm / .22 with a weight of 34 grain. This combination of mass and hollow point design means this projectile performs best in a powerful PCP air rifle from approximately 40 joules, where the slug can carry its energy efficiently over longer distances. In practice, this slug performs excellently at distances between 75 and 100 metres, provided the barrel and twist rate are suited to heavier projectiles.

Our experience from the Shogun team

During our test sessions on the range, we immediately noticed how stably the Heavy Slug travels through the air. Its flight behaviour remains tight and predictable, even when wind becomes a factor at distances approaching 100 metres. The heavy mass produces a calm trajectory and minimal drift, making holdover adjustments pleasantly predictable. We found that a chronograph offers real added value here: with this weight, insight into energy output is essential to fine-tune the correct fill pressure and regulator settings.

Technical characteristics in practice

The projectile has a caliber of 5.53 mm, a weight of 34 gr and is made from lead, which ensures good deformation on impact and a clean seal in the barrel. The hollow point design promotes strong energy transfer, while the slender slug profile benefits aerodynamics. With 150 pieces per tin, you have sufficient stock to thoroughly test which velocity and fill pressure work best with your setup. It is always worthwhile to try different grain weights alongside one another, as every barrel responds slightly differently to weight and shape.

Who is this air rifle ammunition suitable for?

This Heavy Slug is intended for shooters with a powerful PCP air rifle who wish to shoot at greater distances with a high degree of precision. Due to the hollow point construction, this projectile is also suitable for pest and rat control, where effective energy transfer is important. Please be aware that the use of an air rifle for pest control is legally regulated: in many cases a licence or hunting permit is required, and this is exclusively permitted for authorised pest controllers or certified users.
