Everything you need to know about Airsoft

Airsoft Terms and Definitions

New to airsoft or just want to refresh some terms? Below you’ll find clear explanations of the most common concepts. Learn what AEG, GBB, HPA and more mean.

What does AEG mean in airsoft?

AEG = Automatic Electric Gun. These are electric replicas powered by a battery, motor, and gearbox. They are practical, reliable, and easy to use.

  • Powered by rechargeable batteries (long playtime).
  • Can fire in semi- and full-auto modes.
  • Low maintenance, popular among beginners and experienced players alike.
  • AEGs with electric blowback are called EBB.
What does GBB mean in airsoft?

GBB = Gas Blowback. These replicas run on gas and simulate recoil like a real firearm.

  • Very realistic feel (recoil and slide action).
  • Popular among players who value realism.
  • Require more maintenance than AEGs.
What does HPA mean in airsoft?

HPA = High Pressure Air. Replicas powered by compressed air from an external tank (usually carried in a backpack).

  • Very consistent performance, adjustable in power and speed.
  • More complex: requires tank, line, and regulator.
  • Mostly popular among experienced players.
What does EBB mean in airsoft?

EBB = Electric Blowback. An electric AEG with an added mechanism that simulates recoil.

Combines the practical benefits of AEGs with a touch of realism, though recoil is less intense than with GBB.

What does blowback mean in airsoft?

Blowback = recoil simulation. Replicas with blowback mimic the movement of a real firearm. Often you also need to rack the slide for the first shot. Mostly popular with pistols.

What is the difference between CO₂ and GBB?
  • CO₂: uses capsules (12g). More consistent pressure, better performance in cold weather, but reloading takes longer and requires tools.
  • GBB (gas): uses refillable gas bottles. Faster refilling, but more sensitive to temperature changes.
Can I use CO₂ magazines in my GBB pistol?

Not by default. Only if the manufacturer specifies compatibility. Using the wrong magazine can damage your replica. Always check the manual or product info.

What types of airsoft gas are there?

Gas comes in different strengths, often indicated by color and number:

  • 1.0 White: above 25 °C
  • 2.0 Green: 10 – 25 °C
  • 3.0 Red: 0 – 10 °C
  • 4.0 Black: below 0 °C

Note: never use heavy gas in high temperatures — this can damage your replica.

Why is my gas magazine leaking?

Possible causes:

  • Using gas that’s too powerful.
  • Dropped the magazine → damaged seals.
  • Stored empty for too long (rubbers dry out).
  • Lack of maintenance / lubrication.
  • Incorrect filling (angled or pressing too hard).

Good maintenance prevents most issues. Watch here how to repair a leaking magazine.

Why is my CO₂ magazine leaking?
  • Tightening the capsule too much → sealing ring loses elasticity.
  • Using without CO₂ oil → rubber dries out.
  • Removing the capsule before it’s empty.
  • Dirt in the valve due to poor cleaning.
  • Base screw inserted incorrectly.

Tip: regular cleaning and using CO₂ oil greatly extends the lifespan.

How do I prevent gas magazine leaks?
  • Always leave a little gas in the magazine.
  • Use gas with silicone oil.
  • Store at room temperature, dry and out of sunlight.
  • Avoid dropping the magazine.
  • Check and tighten valves and screws regularly.

Still leaking? Often repairable. Watch the tutorial video.

What is a hop-up in airsoft?

Hop-up = topspin. A rubber inside the hop-up unit applies backspin to the BB, giving it a curved trajectory for greater range and stability. Adjusted via a dial that changes the pressure.

What is a nub?

A small rubber piece that presses down on the hop-up bucking. Provides consistent pressure and better topspin. Good nubs + buckings can significantly improve range and accuracy.

What does AR15 mean?

AR15 = ArmaLite Rifle model 15. Often mistakenly interpreted as “Assault Rifle.” It’s a civilian sporting rifle, not a fully automatic military weapon like the M4 or M16.

What is the difference between M4 and M16?
  • M16: longer, classic model (Vietnam era).
  • M4: shorter, modular design, developed for urban combat.
What does PDW mean?

PDW = Personal Defence Weapon. Compact weapons for CQB/CQC scenarios. Popular in airsoft due to their small size and maneuverability.

What does CQB or CQC mean?

CQB = Close Quarter Battle, CQC = Close Quarter Combat. Refers to close-range combat, often indoors. In airsoft, CQB is usually played indoors. Common rule: no full-auto indoors.
