Explanation of law on weapons and ammunition

Frequently Asked Questions about Laws and Regulations

Here you’ll find the key rules regarding the purchase, ownership, and use of airsoft replicas, air rifles, knives, and other products — so you know exactly what applies.

When can I buy or use an airsoft replica?

In the Netherlands, you may only purchase and use an airsoft replica if you:

  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Are a member of the NABV or ACA

When purchasing, we require a valid ID and your NABV or ACA membership card. Without these, we cannot sell you an airsoft replica.

Airsoft may only be played at recognized airsoft locations. It is forbidden to carry or use replicas in public.

When can I buy or use an air rifle?

You must be at least 18 years old to purchase and use an air rifle. All air rifles we sell comply with Dutch law.

Where can you shoot?
Only on private property that is not publicly accessible, or at a recognized shooting club.

Transport
An air rifle must always be transported unloaded, preferably in a case or rifle bag.

Important: use of an air rifle for self-defense is not permitted.

When can I buy a firearm?

A police-issued license is always required to own or purchase a firearm. This is only granted if you have a valid reason, such as sport shooting, hunting, or collecting.

Requirements include:

  • Being at least 18 years old
  • Police screening (including background checks and a certificate of good conduct)
  • Storage in an approved gun safe

Owning a firearm without a license is a criminal offense.

When can I buy a bow or crossbow?

Bows: no license required. Ownership is allowed, also for those under 18. Use for hunting is prohibited.

Crossbows: allowed from 18 years old. Use is only permitted on private property or a safe private area. During transport, the bow must always be unstrung and stored properly.

When can I buy or use a blowpipe?

Blowpipes are not covered by Dutch firearms legislation. Ownership is allowed, also under 18. Note: this is not a toy. A dart can cause serious injuries.

Use for hunting or pest control is prohibited.

What are the conditions for purchasing a (pocket) knife?

All knives we sell may be owned in the Netherlands. However, there are restrictions on carrying and using them in public spaces.

Prohibited knives: stilettos, butterfly knives, switchblades, ballistic knives, throwing stars, and knives disguised as other objects.

Allowed: pocket knives, fixed-blade knives, swords, and rapiers (ownership only, not to be carried in public).

Municipalities may have additional rules in their local regulations (APV) or temporary ordinances. Always check locally.

How may I transport my weapon or knife?

Always transport your weapon or knife safely, unloaded, and out of sight
