H&N Slug HP 5.53mm 23gr – slug for PCP air rifle with hollow point

The H&N Slug HP is a cylindrical slug for PCP air rifle with a pronounced hollow point design, manufactured in Germany by H&N Sport. With a caliber of 5.5 mm / .22, a head diameter of 5.53 mm and a weight of 23 grain, this projectile is developed for shooters who want to get the maximum out of their PCP system. The recommended minimum energy is around 25 joules, which means this projectile is most at home in more powerful PCP air rifles covering distances of approximately 75 to 100 metres.

Our experience from the Shogun team

During our test sessions, we noticed that the Slug HP displays stable flight behaviour at sufficient muzzle energy, with a stated ballistic coefficient of 0.094. Around the optimal shooting distance of 50 metres, we observed tight groupings, and at higher energy output the projectile continued to stay well on course towards 75–100 metres. It is worth testing different grain weights in your specific barrel, and a chronograph provides direct insight into the actual energy at which this slug leaves the muzzle — useful for accurately estimating performance at longer range.

Technical characteristics in practice

The projectile has a caliber of 5.5 mm / .22, a weight of 23 grain, a length of 7.1 mm and is manufactured from lead. The bullet shape is a hollow point, meaning the hollow nose ensures strong energy transfer upon impact. The cylindrical shape combined with the relatively high weight ensures good retention of speed and direction at longer range, provided there is sufficient energy (from 25 joules, ideally more for the full range) behind it. The packaging contains 200 pieces, more than enough to try out various distances and settings.

Who is this air rifle ammunition suitable for?

This slug is intended for shooters with a powerful PCP air rifle who focus on long-range precision shooting and target shooting at distances between 50 and 100 metres. Due to the hollow point design, this projectile is also suitable for pest or rodent control, provided the shooter holds the appropriate permits. The use of an air rifle for pest control is legally regulated in the Netherlands; in most cases, an exemption or hunting licence is required and this is exclusively permitted for authorised controllers or certified users.
