H&N Slug HP Heavy .25 – heavy hollow point slug for PCP air rifles

The H&N Heavy Slug is a cylindrical slug for PCP air rifles aimed at shooters who want to get the most out of their setup at longer distances. With a caliber of 6.35 mm / .25 and a weight of 44 grain, this projectile is developed for systems with sufficient energy output. H&N themselves specify a minimum energy of 40 joules and an optimal shooting distance of 50 metres, which suits powerful PCP air rifles that comfortably perform above that threshold.

Our experience from the Shogun team

What stands out to us about this slug is the combination of mass and the hollow point tip, allowing the projectile to maintain a stable trajectory at distances of around 50 to 75 metres. The relatively high ballistic coefficient of 0.128 helps reduce wind sensitivity, something you notice in practice particularly when shooting consistently at longer ranges. With a well-tuned PCP, we see neat grouping behaviour, provided the barrel (typically a choked or slug-specific barrel) works well together with this type of projectile.

Technical specifications in practice

The projectile has a caliber of 6.35 mm / .25, a weight of 44 grain, and a length of 9.8 mm. The bullet shape is a hollow point in cylindrical form, made of lead, and is supplied in a pack of 100 pieces. The higher weight provides greater energy retention over distance, while the hollow point tip ensures good energy transfer on impact. As slugs are sensitive to twist rate and muzzle energy, it is worthwhile testing different grain weights to determine what your specific air rifle shoots best. A chronograph is a useful tool for mapping the actual energy output and optimising the match between rifle and projectile.

Who is this air rifle ammunition suitable for?

This slug is well suited to shooters with a PCP air rifle that comfortably performs above 40 joules and who focus on precision shooting at distances of around 50 to 75 metres. As this is a hollow point with strong expansion, this projectile is also suitable for pest and rodent control. Please be aware that the use of an air rifle for pest control is legally regulated in the Netherlands; in many cases a permit or hunting licence is required and it is exclusively permitted for certified controllers or authorised users.
